Chapter 11-More Big Organic: Meet Rosie, The Free-Range Chicken
Organic food provides more vitamins and minerals for our bodies. It also strengthens our immune systems. The chickens are not Free-Range Chickens because they reside in sheds with a bunch of other Rosie's. So what is the difference between organic chickens and processed chickens? Processed chickens contain pesticides that we are not aware off.
Chapter 13- Grass: Monday
"During my stay at Polyface farm I learned to see grass differently." Joel considers himself to be grass farmer because everything he raises comes from grass. The most important thing is that Joel's organic farming was using the sun. Grass is not only a healthier product but it can benefit farmers because after a grass land is used to grow a crop it is much more fertile.
Chapter 14- The Animals: Tuesday
The Polyface farm is a grass farm. Meaning that the animals eat offgrass, but there different type of grass. Unlike other farms all the chickens in Joels farm are free to eat grass. The chickens who eat the grass are able to kill unecessary insects which makes the soil richer. So Joel takes care of his chickens. He also has eggmobiles which help him transport eggs and clean up messes. The farming here is hard work, but it's worth the job because that means eaing healthier.
Chapter 15 The Slaughterhouse: Wednesday Morning
The day had come. All the chickens were killed. They were killed, scalded, plucked and gutted. The remains were gathered and put away to be used as compost for the grass later on.
Chapter 16- The Market: "Greetings from the non-bar code people"
Most people todaybuy and eat food and know nothing about, besides the fact that it's cheap and affordable. Buying from Polyface you get what you pay for, and that is food worth any pay because it is healthy.
