The book I am reading is " Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. Publisher is by DOUBLEDAY. Published in 1997
In the first 1/3 of the book the main character id talking about finishing college, moving on it life and dealing with death while dealing with how life wasn't what he thought it would be. About how he made promises but didn't keep them. And how he forgot about his dying teacher and decided o go see him.
1."Ted when all this started, I asked myself, 'Am I going to withdraw from the world, like most people do, or am I going to live"(page, 21)
2."There are some morning when I cry and cry and mourn for myself. Some mornings, I so angry and bitter. But it doesn't last long. Then I get up and say 'I want to live...'So far, I've been able to do it. Will I be able to continue? I don't know. ButI'm betting on myself that I will."( page, 21)
3."I have been teaching this course for twenty years, and this is the first time I can say there is a risk in taking it, because I have a fatal illness. I may not live to finish the semester." ( page, 9)
4." Tell me something close to your heart"(page, 20)
I think that this book really helps you see how you really act with people's death around you. And how some people who are dying deal with death. But Ithink that most people that do not die right away but that dealing with and illness are ok with dying if they are older after like 2 months of living with that illness. And I wonder why some people that have illness and that are in pain all the time why don't they just don't kil them selves or something.
I thought you did a nice job with tis post because you gave a short summary, you had quotes and you analyzed those quotes.
ReplyDeleteWhat i liked best was how wehn you were analyzing you really thought about what the book was showing the reader and you built you ideas of of that,
"I think that this book really helps you see how you really act with people's death around you. And how some people who are dying deal with death."
one thing you could work on would be to use specifics when you analyze the ideas so be specific for ewach quote and talk about why you had that readction to it
Bryanna,
ReplyDeleteI think you pulled some profound quotes from the book. "There are some morning when I cry and cry and mourn for myself. Some mornings, I so angry and bitter. But it doesn't last long. Then I get up and say 'I want to live...'So far, I've been able to do it. Will I be able to continue? I don't know. ButI'm betting on myself that I will."( page, 21). I wonder why you chose this quote? Do you think that human existence is about survival, and with that in mind, do you think that people make choices or live by accepting what life has thrown their way? Morrie was a strong person, who I think like most of us, was unaware of how strong he could be for himself and those he loved. I think the word "withdrawal" is profound because it makes us think about the choices we have everyday to engage and make connections-to live or to shell up and deal with the miseries that sometimes consume us. His determination pushed him through and without that we never would have gotten the opportunity to read this book that captures the essence of our lives and allows us to appreciate what we take for granted, and how to step back and consider how we are living our lives. Going through the motions in many ways is also a withdrawal and I think the Mitch expresses that and leads to to see this story as a place to consider life and death in a tangible way.
I think you choice some great quotes, but next time embed some of your comments as to what they mean and why you chose them.
