HW 24 - Illness & Dying Book, Part 3

The book I am reading is " Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. Publisher is by DOUBLEDAY. Published in 1997

In the third 1/3 of the book the main character is talking about those things that he once wrote down which wereDeath,Fear, Aging,Greed,Marriage,Family,Socitey, Forgiveness,A meaningful life. They spend more and more time together. They did a lot of talking and a lot of sharing thoughts. Until one day they had to say good bye.

1."Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning, when I wake up, I am reborn."-mahatma gandhi(page, 129)

2."Forgive yourself before you die. Then forgive others."(page, 164)

3."I believe he died this way on purpose. I believe he wanted no chilling moments, no one to witness his last breath and be haunted by it, the way he had been haunted....."

4."My father moved through theys of we, singing each new leaf out of each tree(and every child was sure that spring danced when she heard my father sing)..."(page, 189)

From what I was reading I started to think about if I want people around me when I die. Do I want them to see me take my last breath or anything? I think that I want to die with no one round me. Because I think that if I have people around I am not going to be ok with dying and I am going to try and fight agaisnt death.

  1. Your thoughts on the final portion of the book are insightful. I like the fact that you focus your final thoughts around the idea of dying alone. It seems that yes, we all leave this earth by ourselves but many don't have a choice on when or where, so it really isn't worth thinking much about. I think the quote you chose about forgiveness is also a vital aspect when a person is nearing or at the end of his/her life. Life is full of ups and downs-it is a journey of conflict and trepidation and one should reach at the end, a place to forgive and let go.
    Thanks for sharing.

  2. I agree, i think death would be harder if you have many people around you because you will want to keep on fighting to be woth them like you said. but i wonder if you were alone would you be ok with the thought of dying ? i also think all the quotes you shared are very insightful. nice job
