1. Live life like it is your last day- Bryanna
2. Be around the ones you love the most in the time of death- Beth
3. You know when you are about to die- My mother
4. Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning, when I wake up, I am reborn.- Mahatma Gandhi

The sources that have been the most helpful were talking to people who know someone that died. This was helpful because they got to tell me how they felt, reacted, and how things were after that person died. Also becuase they talk about if they was in that potision what they would do and what they could not do. Their thoughts and feelings and stuff made me see more how we are all sacred to let other people see us die from an illness. And I think it is weird how most of us go through the same thing but yet we try to act like we are different from one other.

HW 25 - Response to Sicko

The movie is about health care, it is about how people have health care but don’t have health insurance. It talked about how people think they will be covered when they have a big bill from the hospital, but they are really not. It also talked about how they insurance company will do anything to make sure you do not get any money from them. It also talked about how President Nixon started the whole thing with health care and health insurance.

The two pieces of evidence that Michael Moore used were the facts about what is going on and how we can change this that people

HW 24 - Illness & Dying Book, Part 3

The book I am reading is " Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. Publisher is by DOUBLEDAY. Published in 1997

In the third 1/3 of the book the main character is talking about those things that he once wrote down which wereDeath,Fear, Aging,Greed,Marriage,Family,Socitey, Forgiveness,A meaningful life. They spend more and more time together. They did a lot of talking and a lot of sharing thoughts. Until one day they had to say good bye.

1."Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning, when I wake up, I am reborn."-mahatma gandhi(page, 129)

2."Forgive yourself before you die. Then forgive others."(page, 164)

3."I believe he died this way on purpose. I believe he wanted no chilling moments, no one to witness his last breath and be haunted by it, the way he had been haunted....."

4."My father moved through theys of we, singing each new leaf out of each tree(and every child was sure that spring danced when she heard my father sing)..."(page, 189)

From what I was reading I started to think about if I want people around me when I die. Do I want them to see me take my last breath or anything? I think that I want to die with no one round me. Because I think that if I have people around I am not going to be ok with dying and I am going to try and fight agaisnt death.

HW 23 - Illness & Dying Book, Part 2

The book I am reading is " Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. Publisher is by DOUBLEDAY. Published in 1997

In the second 1/3 of the book the main character is talking about how his union is going on strike. He also talked about how he was going to be able to do what he like he do and how is he going to live with out a job. He also talked about how he goes to see his teacther more. And how they talk more about death. They talk about what they are scared of and what is going on with their life.

1. "Ask me anything,"Morrie always said. So I wrote this list:
Death
Fear
Aging
Greed
Marriage
Family
Socitey
Forgiveness
A meaningful life(page, 66)

2."A teacher affects eternity;he can never tell where his influence stops."-Herby Adams(page, 79)

3."Yes. But there's abetter approach. To know you're going to die, and to be prepared for it at any time. That's better. That way you can actually be more involved in you life while your're living."(page, 81)

4."I don't want to leave the world in the stateof fright. I want to know what's happening, accpet it, get to a peaceful place, and let go. Do you understand?"(page, 107)

My thoughts are still the same as before. I still feel that the more ok with death you are the longer you will live. And that if you live life as if nothing is wrong then you will be able to live the life you want to live. But at the same time I find myself not really thinking about death these days. I only think about it in class and since we have not been talking about I have not really thought about it so maybe my thought aren't the same because I have not heard and other out looks on it. So I really can't say if my thoughts have change.

HW 22 - Illness & Dying Book Part 1

The book I am reading is " Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. Publisher is by DOUBLEDAY. Published in 1997

In the first 1/3 of the book the main character id talking about finishing college, moving on it life and dealing with death while dealing with how life wasn't what he thought it would be. About how he made promises but didn't keep them. And how he forgot about his dying teacher and decided o go see him.

1."Ted when all this started, I asked myself, 'Am I going to withdraw from the world, like most people do, or am I going to live"(page, 21)
2."There are some morning when I cry and cry and mourn for myself. Some mornings, I so angry and bitter. But it doesn't last long. Then I get up and say 'I want to live...'So far, I've been able to do it. Will I be able to continue? I don't know. ButI'm betting on myself that I will."( page, 21)
3."I have been teaching this course for twenty years, and this is the first time I can say there is a risk in taking it, because I have a fatal illness. I may not live to finish the semester." ( page, 9)
4." Tell me something close to your heart"(page, 20)

I think that this book really helps you see how you really act with people's death around you. And how some people who are dying deal with death. But Ithink that most people that do not die right away but that dealing with and illness are ok with dying if they are older after like 2 months of living with that illness. And I wonder why some people that have illness and that are in pain all the time why don't they just don't kil them selves or something.

Hw 21b

For Ariel,I like how you really look at his work and fron the beauty in it. The way you can see the love of Beth and Erik in his work with out even knowing them on the level of people close to them. "One of them is 2 fishes kissing. One with a woman face and one with a man face. I interpreted it as Beth and Erik’s last kiss. Some fishes are closing their eyes and I feel
like those portray death because a dead fish has their eyes shut. Then there were two with baby faces, I feel like those represent his two children, Ean and josh."
I alsolove how you talked about how you could do what she did, because I do not think I could either. But you really did focus on how a lot of family do not eat together and do not want to eat together. You have a way of point out the beauty in things that other people do. So for this blog I do not think you have anthing you need to work on. Goood job.

Ariel said for me,The killer phrase that caught my attention was,"Another point that I think that was good was the fact that she did not have anyone but herself takd care of her husband. Because this is a time where families should be together and spend all time you can with each other.I think that only person/people that should see you at your worst is the people close to you." To me i can see where you are coming from and find it to be true. Death is a stage of your life that should be filled with the last memories being with you family. I cant relate to josh and Ean's son to father relationship because i don't have my father now. Although my dad played a huge role in my life from the day i was born to the age of 7. I was daddy's little girl. Therefore i can partially understand the pain they went through. Beth's love for Erik was immense and i respect her journey with Erik through his death. What i don't seem to understand are her final feelings. Why do you think she didn't cry that much? Can you relate to her emotions or think she was rather "cold"? Do think she is an existentialist or transcendentalist person?

Hw #21

1. We are all going to die so we just need to learn to deal with it.
2. No one was going to take care her husband.
3. Treat him as a person nad the disease.
4. Never talked about death/dying.
5. Postive thoughts.
6. Hallucination when they are close to th end.
7. Honeymoon from death(things seem better but they get bad really fast).
8. Be nice to people to help you get farther in life.
9. Make the moat in life.
10. Ask questions to make sure that you know what is going on.
11. when they are close to the end they stop eating.

I think that the idea of being postive is a good thing. I think that the idea of having to be reminded of the fact that you are sick is going to make you feel even worst and drive you killing your body without even knowing.I would like it if people acted as there was nothing wrong with me so I could leave the thought of dying until I about to die. I feel that the more postive look you have on disease the longer you will with that disease.

Another point that I think that was good was the fact that she did not have anyone but herself takd care of her husband. Because this is a time where families should be together and spend all time you can with each other.I think that only person/people that should see you at your worst is the people close to you.

1. What would you tell someone to help them deal with the pain.
2. If you could have done anything to put yor husband out of his pain would you hvae done it?
3. Why were you so open with the fact that he had an illness?

HW 19 - Family Perspectives on Illness & Dying

In my opinion I think that illness and dying is something that I don't want to think or talk about. I mean I know it is going to happen but I would rather just live life and not thinking about a time where I will no longer think, speak, or anything. But since we are talking about in class it is kind of opening me up to death. I started to see that I am holistic. I think that if you sleep, drink tea, and more you will feel better. I also think that if you have a postive look at it things would be better.

I think that the reason that I think this way is beacuse my mom. She never takes me the doctor. She always says that sleep and tea will make me feel better. She also believes that if your head hurts it means something like you have a lot of angry or if your feet hurt that you are hiding something. My mom believes in mother nature and that things happen for a reason and that if we just look at it in the bigger pivture things will work out for the better.

But other people in my family are not the same. They think that she crazy. they feel that illness is something that you hide and not tell people about. That there is not comimg back once you are to sick. They also run to the doctor for any little thing. They also take pills that they should not be taking but just because they are a little sleepy then normal days they take sleeping pills.

This thanksgiving I went upstate for the holiday. I think that we did both. early in the morning we watch the parade together as a family talked and laughed. Then we sat in the kicten and talked about chirstmas and we talked about what is going on in the new. Then We danced around before eating and a little after eating. We listen to a little bit of old school music. We also watched the football game and then watched the chris rock stand-up comedy. And after watching it we started talking about avatar and the point of the movie. And before leaving we made fun of how a lot of black and spanish people "act".
And with my grandmother just finish having surgery on her knee we try to help her with things so that she does hurt her self. But me being the"badone" in the family i think that after 5 month she should be doing alittle bit more then what she is doing. So I help her with somethings but I think that she needs to get stong again so she needs to do somethings. And with my aunt in California not feeling with my mom thinks that something is wrong with her but we just call to see if she is ok but don't talk to much until she is ready to talk about it.
I think that when it comes to me I don't talk about people illness but after a while I start to talk about it and stuff I feel that is the only way to make yourself better is if you deal with. And maybe it is nit the best way to handle it but I think it is and people never want to talk about how they want people to treat them so I go off what I would want and what I would fell comfortable with.

Hw 17

When it comes to illness and dying I never think about it nor do I want to think about. I mean I know I going to die and that I have to die but I just can't picture what life would be like without me or think about how I will not be able to think feel or move. I think that is going to be hard to do this unit because of the fact that I am scared to think abaout that thought. And with most people not wanting to talk about things that can kill us I don't think that we will all be open to everything.
The idea in my house is that we don't need to go to the hospital. My mom feels that if you sleep it off the cold would go away or if you have aids that fact that you just deal wityh it you will live longer. So we kind believe that if you have a positive look on things life will be better. I do feel that is true and I think that when I see people in the hospital I try to lighten their day so that they can see the positive side of life so make them laugh.
But I do think that if I was sick I would not want anyone to see me. I think that I would want to be myself to get my rest so that I can get out of there. But I am dying and I know that I am not going to live an longer I want people that I am going to miss. But I really never thought about to say. and hopeful I will learn more about to deal with dying as this unit begins.

For my final project I decided to eat fruits for lunch instead of meat. It was not that hard like alot of people thought it would be because I did it before so I use to it but even when I did it for the first time years ago it was not hard to do. I think it was beacuse I like fruit.
What I saw while I was eating fruits as that I was a little more happy then I was when I was not eating fruits (expert for one day. But I saw that I was more happy to come to school and that I wanted to do everything. I also saw that I would not feel so tired during the day.
I would eat more fruit but when it gets cold the fruit man is not as much as he is during the summer and spring and then to go to a store downtown is more money tehn in the bronx.

Thesis:
Many of the dominant social practices in our society are looked at as what we call "normal" but by learning more of what we are doing vs. what the government is really doing we would find out nightmarish and industrial atrocities that wouldmake you think twice before doing.

Supporting claim 1: what we think is in/ about the food
Evidence: asking people that eat the food
Evidence: Ask people who serve the food.

Supporting claim 2: what is really in the food
Evidence: what they fee the animals
Evidence: what they do when they kill them

Chapter 17- My Grass-Fed Meal: A week's pay

Before I left the farm friday I pulled together the ingredients of what ended up being an amazing dinner. These ingredients consisted of 2 of the chicken we had slaughtered, a dozen eggs i helped gatrher and a dozen ears of sweet corn. The evenings meal included other things so I picked out local produce. I wanted this meal to be bar code- free.

Chapter 18- The Forest: Survivor Food

I decided to hunted myself and get my own food. The hunt reminded me of times when I would to hunt for clams and mushrooms with my family. It would be the last option on our food chain. I heard about Angelo Garro a hunter who hunts for his food, so i wanted him to teach me his skills. So that I could get health food like him. Soon enough would become my tutor.

Chapter 19 - Eating Animals; The Meat Eater's Dilema
It was a long time since the thought of eating meat had crossed my mind. In reality it was a dilema. After owning my own steer and killing cones in Joel Salatins processing shed i knew the things that these animals had went through. So i had a lot of thoughts about it . Peter Singer wrote a book called Animal Liberation in which he argued that animals shouldnt be treated the same as humans but they can suffer just as we do. So now i had decided to become a vegetarian.

Chapter 20 - hunting: A walk in the woods

Hunting was not what i ecpected it to be. It makes everything sharper and more vivid. It made me pay close attention like i've never have before. This is why i did not expect it. You notice alot more because you are so focused and even though im embaressed to say it i will, hunting is exciting.

1. The main idea of the films were to show us what is going on behind close doors. How they kill animals. How the animals eat corn that has been messed with. How they use chemicals to grow the corn and then give that corn to the cows and chicken and know they have chemicals inside of them that is being passed on to us. And how they are stay in they owe body waste.

2. The movie offers you the view. You get to see it and not just read it or hear about it. Where as the book offers you the knowledge of how to talk and it and able to read it over and over again to get it that way you don't miss out on anything important

3. what made thw government start putting chemiclas in tghe corn in the first place? Is making corn grow faster that much better?

Chapter 11-More Big Organic: Meet Rosie, The Free-Range Chicken
Organic food provides more vitamins and minerals for our bodies. It also strengthens our immune systems. The chickens are not Free-Range Chickens because they reside in sheds with a bunch of other Rosie's. So what is the difference between organic chickens and processed chickens? Processed chickens contain pesticides that we are not aware off.

Chapter 13- Grass: Monday
"During my stay at Polyface farm I learned to see grass differently." Joel considers himself to be grass farmer because everything he raises comes from grass. The most important thing is that Joel's organic farming was using the sun. Grass is not only a healthier product but it can benefit farmers because after a grass land is used to grow a crop it is much more fertile.

Chapter 14- The Animals: Tuesday
The Polyface farm is a grass farm. Meaning that the animals eat offgrass, but there different type of grass. Unlike other farms all the chickens in Joels farm are free to eat grass. The chickens who eat the grass are able to kill unecessary insects which makes the soil richer. So Joel takes care of his chickens. He also has eggmobiles which help him transport eggs and clean up messes. The farming here is hard work, but it's worth the job because that means eaing healthier.

Chapter 15 The Slaughterhouse: Wednesday Morning
The day had come. All the chickens were killed. They were killed, scalded, plucked and gutted. The remains were gathered and put away to be used as compost for the grass later on.

Chapter 16- The Market: "Greetings from the non-bar code people"
Most people todaybuy and eat food and know nothing about, besides the fact that it's cheap and affordable. Buying from Polyface you get what you pay for, and that is food worth any pay because it is healthy.

Chapter 6 - Processed Food:Splitting The Kernel
Not all of the food that americans eat is fresh made from corn. Alot of corn is processed corn. Some foods have been altered from their natural state. The methods used for processing foods include canning, freezing, refrigeration, dehydration and aseptic processing. "Processed" Corn are in a lot of the things we eat daily, like chocolate, butter and breads. Many things are made with corn in its ingredient and many things are made with corn syrup.

1.If corn is so big then why isnt it made in a way that will be goo for us?

Chapter 7 - Fat Corn:Can You Eat More, Please? Part 2
Corn is in all types of foods. It affects not only in adults but in children but it ia a big problem. There are so many calories included in corn syrup and other forms of corn that it has caused an increase in obesity.
1. How come corn be so big if it is nit good for us ?

Chapter 8 - The Ominvore's Dilemma:Is That Food?
Unlike humans, animals don't have a problem with their eating habits. Animals eat because they have to survive and they tend not to care about what they eat and how it taste. Most humans are picky about what they eat and what it taste like. Some humans just eat because they have to and so do animals. This shows that humans and animals have some eating habits in common. Animals are more reasonable then humans when it comes to eating.
1. How does peoples eating habits effect the food market and the economy?

Chapter 9 - My Fast-Food Meal: Fast Food
Mcdonalds and fast food meals are made so that they have similar taste. Mcdonalds uses corn in a lot of their products that they have. Mcdonalds chicken nuggets are really bad for you. They can even cause cancer. Since Mcdonalds is so cheap and fattening it increases obesity because everyone can afford it.

Q: Why do some people chose to read the ingredients on foods and do don't change what they are eating?

Chapter 3-From Farm to Factory:Turning bombs into fertilizer
Agribusiness has given farmers tools and fertilizers to make corn more sccessful. The government gave farmers the choice to buy nitrogen so that itwould be used in the fertilizer farmers use on their crops. This changed things for farming because it made things much easier but the corn syarted to hav all types of chemicals in it .

Chapter 4-The grain Elevator: Food On Te Ground
"One day in spring I visited the grain elevator in Farnhamville Iowa , that's where George naylor hauls his corn each october. Grain elevators are tall and are the tallest buildings in this part of Iowa."

Chapter 5-The Feedlot-Turning corn into meat: city of cows
I wanted to see HOW a cow came from a farm and was turned into the meat that would end up in our stomach so I bought one. I noticed how cow #534 was treated and that made me think more about eating meat. The cows were being forced to eat corn which was not part of their diet. By feeding these cows corn they gained weight which created more meat for us, but it made the cows sick.

HW 7 - Reading Response Monday

The Omnivore's Dilemma
By:Michael Pollan

Chapter 1:
The main point of chapter 1 was corn. The fact that corn is in everything the we eat. " Corn is in the non-dairy creamer and the Cheez Whiz, the frozen yogurt and the TV dinner, the canned fruit and the ketchup. It's in the candy, the cake mixes, mayonnaise, mustard, hot dogs and bologna, the salad dressing and even in some vitamins.( Yes, it's in a Twinkie too)" (page 11). That if you go to the supermarket you think that there are some many things to pick from to eat but really all there is, is corn. Because if you look deeper it is all corn.

1. I find it interesting is that corn is everything that we eat.
2. I hope that as I read more i will learn how some foods are bad and some are good if that "all"come from corn?

Chapter 2:
The main point of chapter 2 is talking about farms. How farmers use to farm and how they farmer now. " The average farmer grew enough food to feed twelve other Americans...... Out of 300 million Americans, only 2 million are still farmers. That means the average American farmer today grows enough food to feed 140 other people." (page 21) Also how over time people come up will "better" seeds to help grow better, but it really maybe bad for us.

HW 5 - Dominant Discourses Regarding Contemporary Foodways in the U.S.

A dominate discourse is when people have power and the majority of those people discuss particular issues. And when majority believes that the people that are head in charge or have the most power should be the ones with the most say and control in those particular topics. When it comes to food the dominant discourse are the dietitians, doctors, trainers and large food corporations.
When it comes to talking about the dominant discourse in america the topic that comes up alot is "What food should we eat? How can we make food healthier? What food is bad for us?". I also feel that the idea of organic is one of biggest topics being talked about. When food is being discussed people who are the ones talking are the people with power .

HW#4 - Your Families' Foodways

When looking at what my grandmother ate to momther to me there are things that we have things tht are the same and we have things that are different. I thought that they would be total different but they are not. But when I think about it now as my mom is older she does eat different things.

My grandmother said she ate everything because she was a fat kid. But she said that her mother cooked alot chicken, pork chops, callard greens, beans, hot bread, and more. Since she grew up down south that is sounds normal. My mom said that my grandmother steak, hambuger, meatloaf, trukey, wingd, pork chops, pig feet, and more. So my grandmother brought some of that south cooking up north and into my mother life. Now my mother cooks for me chicken, corn, rice, and spaghetti, but for mys sister cooks steak, chicken, meatloat, pork chops, and trukey.

And that my mother is older she eats different. She alot of vegetables, fruit, and ice. That is how my niece eats. I think that the differents with all of us is location, age, and who people around you. Like my grandmother grew up down south, whereas my mother was grew up in the north. And with with me and my sister she was kinda raised by my grandmother since my mom was young when she had her so he was raised with homecooked meals whereas my mom raised me and didn't have time to cook so i was raised off frozen dinners. Then there is my niece she is growing up in a time where a lot of the kids are over weight so my mom feeds her vegetables and fruits.

HW#3Food - Fast Food Insights and Green Market Realizations

From class on wednseday I saw and learned a little more then what I knew. I told that a fast food restaurant would have more people there then market. But I was wrong, I saw a lot more people at the market then at wendy's. I also noticed that at the market most of the people were adults. I also saw that there more white people. And the market was bigger then wendy's.
I also saw noticed that the people working at the market knew about what they were selling. Like when I went to wendy's I over heard natalie and abe asking questions the lady knew what she was selling but you had to ask. where as at the maket they would tell you before you asked. They knew how much so or so was put into the item. I also saw that food was health.
I most go to fast food restaurant. But after going to the greenmarket I was saw how I could be eating better. I think that the reason why I go fast food restaurant is becuase the food is made fast. I don't have time to pick out fresh fruit, then cut them and make fruit salad. And my mom don't have enough time go clean the fish, cut and then cook. But it would be better to do this so that we know what we are eating.

HW#2-FOOD-Initial Thoughts

1. What is the first thing you think of when you think of food?
I first thing I think of of is happiness. I think of when I am happy, sad mad or just bored I eat. And when I eat I feel happy and full and one with myself. I also think of the places and remembers that go along with that food, or place.

2. What is your favorite food?
Cheese burger and french fries

3. What is ideal meal?

I really don't know. I think that my ideal meal would be a meal where I am eating something I like around people I want to be around and with good times with some laughs.

I think when it comes to food I really don't think about what I am eating. I mean I think about how well it is cooked and who is cooking my food but I don't really think about if it is health or not. I eat what I fell is good for me. Like some people that are over weight should think about what they are eating so they would not get over weight more have heart problems. But I have days when I eat health and have days where I eat fat food and I days where I eat food that are okay to eat.

I also think that when you are in different places you don't really think more about what you are eating. Like when I want to the bahamas I ate what they ate. And since i was out there was a enviromently people I ate a lot. You eat what the people around you are eating. And you question it you just do as you see and try not to be rude to the people around you by not eating their food.

I think that what I can do is think about what I am eating. Where did it come from, what did they add to the food to make it taste good, what chemicals that are in this that may kill or affect my body. I want to know what I am putting in my mouth. I learn more about how cooking you own fod is better then eating fast food.
What are the sercets behind food and how food is whay it is.
